Keuka, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team (0-1) opened their season with a loss on Wednesday evening, falling to the Keuka Wolfpack by the final score of 68-47.
In the first three minutes of the game, Keuka went up by five over D'Youville at 9-4. The Wolfpack began to increase their lead throughout the first quarter to take a 19-4 lead. A pair of baskets from Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) and Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) brought the score to 21-8 Keuka as the first quarter drew to a close.
The Wolfpack opened up the second quarter and built upon their lead. With just over five minutes remaining in the first half, the Spartans began to chip away at their deficit with free throws from Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) and CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis). A jumper from Evans would close out the scoring for D'Youville in the first half with the Spartans trailing 43-21.
D'Youville had a slow start on offense to being the third quarter. The women scored just four points throughout four minutes before Field made a layup followed by two Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) free throws. The women had several other made free throws throughout the quarter, including one from Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal). At the end of three, Keuka led D'Youville 54-34.
The lead built by the Wolfpack was too large for the Spartans to overcome in the fourth. D'Youville went to the line frequently and was able to convert several chances from the charity stripe, closing the gap on Keuka. The final horn would sound as the Wolfpack defeated the Spartans 68-47.
"We know we aren't where we want to be yet," said head coach Dan Glover. "The effort and enthusiasm were there all game we were happy to see that."
Captains Evans and June each led the team with 10 point in the game. Field led the team with five rebounds and added a team high nine points off the bench. Alton contributed four rebounds while Howard added six points. Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) had two steals in the game with June and Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) leading the team with three each. Simone also led the team with three assists.
There is plenty to build on after the first game for the women, and coach Glover looks forward to putting in the work.
"We saw what we need to work on and we will keep working. The season is a marathon, not a sprint."
The next game for the women comes this Friday, November 17 as they play SUNY Poly at 5:00pm. The game is the first game of the weekend for the women at the Roos Classic, hosted by SUNY Canton.
