Canton, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team (0-2) began their weekend at the Roos Classic with a loss, falling to the SUNY Poly Wildcats by the final score of 80-50.
Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) opened the scoring in the game with a three-pointer for the Spartans for a quick 3-0 lead. Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) and Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) followed with back-to-back layups, giving D'Youville a 7-4 advantage. The Wildcats would then take over with a seven-point lead with 1:47 remaining in the first quarter but with 1:30 left in the first, Sara Field (Durhamville/VVS) scored a pair of layups to make it a three-point game at 20-17 after 10 minutes of action.
After nearly two minutes of play in the second quarter, the Spartans pulled to within one point of the SUNY Poly lead. However the Wildcats would heat up and D'Youville would go cold as SUNY Poly went on an 11-0 scoring run after the Spartans pulled to within one and held a 31-19 advantage. The offensive woes of the Spartans continued throughout the quarter as they were outscored 21-5 and the Wildcats went into halftime up 41-22.
To begin the third quarter, the two teams traded baskets as D'Youville answered every time the Wildcats attempted to extend their lead. Over a nearly five-minute span, The Spartans added just two points while SUNY Poly jumped out to a commanding 56-31 lead. The Wildcats then pulled away even more by the end of the third, leading 62-34.
D'Youville saved one of their best offensive quarters for last. The team totaled 16 points as June, Morgan Lehman (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove), Makenna Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack), Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/HIlton), and Briana Dotterweich (Alexandra Bay, NY/Lafargeville) all got to the line. However the Wildcat lead would be too much to overcome with SUNY Poly taking the game by the final of 80-50.
June led the team in scoring with seven points in the game, while Smith, Simone, Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville), and Field each added six points. Smith grabbed a team high 11 rebounds with CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) grabbed six off the bench. In total, 13 players for D'Youville scored in the game.
D'Youville will have a quick turnaround as they will finish their time in the Roos Classic against the host SUNY Canton Kangaroos on Saturday, November 19 at 2:00pm.
