Canton, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team (0-3) lost their second game of the Roos Classic on Saturday afternoon, falling to the host SUNY Canton Kangaroos by the final score of 56-35.
Canton was very effective on both ends of the court in the first quarter. The Kangaroos began the game on a 12-0 scoring stretch before a Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) three put the Spartans on the board. After Magee's three, Canton continued to pour on the offense and held a 21-3 lead until 1:14 remained in the first before D'Youville scored five points to close out the quarter trailing 21-8.
Both teams struggled on offense in the second quarter, combining for six points through the first 5:51 of the second. Four consecutive free throws from Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) pulled the Spartans to within 11 with 3:37 to go in the half, but the Kangaroos would score the next seven to reestablish their lead. D'Youville added one more point before the halftime horn sounded as Canton led 32-15.
In the first 4:46 of the third, the Kangaroos outscored the Spartans 7-1 to take a 39-16 lead. Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) scored four points to make the game 41-20, but Canton's lead maintained their substantial lead and ended the quarter with a 46-26 advantage.
The fourth quarter was much of the same for the two teams. Morgan Lehman (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) and Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) each added points late in the fourth, but the Kangaroos' lead was safe as they defeated the Spartans by the final score of 56-35.
Three players scored seven points in the game, including Magee, Field, and CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Howard). Howard also added a team high seven rebounds, with Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) adding five. Of the 15 players that played in Saturday's game, 14 of them recorded at least one rebound while seven players recorded at least one assist.
