D'Youville Falls to Wells in Women's Basketball

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team lost a close game Monday evening, falling to the Wells Express by the final of 66-58.

Freshman Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) started off the game for the Spartans with a pair of threes, giving them a early 6-2 lead. After a Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) three to give D'Youville a 10-6 advantage, Wells began to chip away at the lead. They overtook the Spartans with 3:45 remaining in the first with a 12-10 lead, but Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) scored a pair of baskets in the final minute to give D'Youville a 16-15 lead at the end of one.

Evans' effective play carried over into the second quarter. She scored the first three baskets of the second for the women, pushing the Spartans out to a 22-17 lead. A Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) three gave D'Youville their largest lead of the game at nine. With 2:58 to go in the half, Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) kept it an eight-point game before the Express scored eight unanswered points to tie the game at 31 going into halftime.

The game remained close throughout the third quarter. Each time D'Youville took the lead from Wells, the Express would answer to tie the game. Tied at 37, Wells scored five points to take a 42-37 lead until an Evans jumper brought the score back to within three. With 0:58 to go in the quarter, Smith tied the game at 44 but Wells would answer again with a three to close out the third as D'Youville trailed 47-44.

Wells controlled the lead entering the fourth and fought hard to keep it. Kellner drilled a three following a Wells layup to keep the score within three. Alton then made a three of her own just a few minutes later to make it a two-point game at 52-50. However the Spartans offense stalled late as the Express pulled way to a 61-53 lead with 1:12 remaining in regulation. Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) hit a three with 0:38 to go, making it a six point game, but D'Youville ran out of time as Wells took the game 66-58.

Evans led the team with a season high 17 points to go with six rebounds, tied with Kellner for the team lead. Kellner added 11 points of her own while Alton dished out a team high six assists and seven points. Simone contributed nine points and four rebounds off the bench.

D'Youville will return to game-action following the Thanksgiving break by hosting the Cazenovia Wildcats on Sunday, November 26 at 1:00pm.
