Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team (1-4) picked up their first win of the season on Sunday afternoon, defeating the previously undefeated Cazenovia Wildcats 84-79.
Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) gave D'Youville a 7-6 lead after nearly four minutes of play in the first quarter as the Spartan's offense began to start to click against the Wildcats. That lead grew from one to seven after a Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) made layup, followed by two Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) baskets to increase the Spartan lead to nine. As the quarter wound down, Cazenovia began to battle back and pull the score to within two as they trailed 26-24 at the end of the first quarter.
The Wildcats tied the game at 26 with the first basket of the second quarter, but D'Youville answered right back with an Evans layup. Cazenovia would retake the lead each of the next two times the Spartans took the lead, but Smith began to carry the offense for the Spartans and push her ahead.
Trailing 32-31 at the 6:04 mark, Smith scored nine of 11 points for D'Youville, giving the women a 42-38 lead over Caz. After a Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) layup, Smith closed out the half for D'Youville with back-to-back layups as the Spartans finished the second quarter leading 48-40 over the Wildcats.
In the third quarter, Magee and Evans shouldered the brunt of the offense for D'Youville. Magee accounted for seven of the first nine points of the half for D'Youville as her free throw 2:52 into the quarter gave D'Youville a 57-45 lead. Evans then scored six of the next eight points for the Spartans in the quarter, combining for eight total points in the third and 15 total points between the two juniors.
However, Cazenovia had a strong final 4:10 of the quarter to put themselves right back into the game. Trailing 63-48, the Wildcats outscored D'Youville 13-2 to close out the third by trailing by just four at 65-61.
Senior Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) was big for the Spartans to begin the fourth quarter. Simone scored six of the first seven points for the team to give them a 74-63 lead. After a Smith jumper with 5:25 to go in the game, both teams hit a lull on offense. The two teams went scoreless until there was 2:54 remaining on the clock where June scored the first of her three consecutive layups for D'Youville, giving them an 82-72 lead. Magee added a layup with 1:16 to go in regulation, putting the game just out of reach for the Wildcats as D'Youville would hold on to win their first game of the season by the final score of 84-79.
The team's four juniors were the keys to their success on Sunday afternoon. Evans led the way with a career high 19 points, adding three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Smith also hit a career high with 19 points to go with nine rebounds, and two assists of her own. Magee had an outstanding game of her own, scoring a season high 15 points with nine rebounds, five steals, three assists, and two blocks – including going 4-6 from three.
