Women Earn First Conference Win with Victory over Lions

Erie, PA – The D'Youville women's basketball team earned their first conference victory and second consecutive victory on Wednesday evening, defeating the Penn State-Behrend Lions by the final score of 62-45.

D'Youville got out to a quick 4-0 lead after a Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirdondack) made three and Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) free throw. Behrend answered with a three just second later to make the score 4-3, but that would be the last scoring either team would do for the next several minutes. Over the next four minutes, neither team would score until Alton made a layup increased the D'Youville lead to three. Alton and Magee continued to dominate the first quarter as they combined for nine more points through the remainder of the quarter, all from behind the arc, giving the Spartans a 15-9 lead after the first.

Their lead increased to 12 and the Spartans went into halftime leading the Lions 36-24.

Behrend was able to get the game back to within single digits to open the second half before a Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) layup brought the score to double-digits once again. A few minutes later, Simone hit a three to make the lead 12 and a Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) free throw made it 13. As the Lions pulled back to a 10-point deficit, Sarah Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) made back-to-back layups to end the third and sent the Spartans into the fourth with a 51-37 lead.

In the fourth quarter, D'Youville began to progressively pull away from Behrend. Two CeDrice Howard (Curtis, WA/University Place) layups increased the Spartan's lead to 18 with 5:27 to go in the game, and the women again had an 18-point lead with 3:19 to go.
