Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team suffered their first conference loss of the season on Saturday afternoon by falling 81-49 to the Mount Aloysius Mounties.
Mount Aloysius jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first minute of action, making their mark early on in the game. The Mounties then increased their lead to seven as they had a 12-5 lead over the Spartans nearly halfway through the first quarter. However D'Youville's offense would begin to get going as Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) made a layup followed by a Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) three to give the Spartans their first lead. In the final minute of the quarter, Mount Aloysius went up 17-13 before Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) and Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) scored late to make it 17-16 Mounties after one.
The Spartans kept the game close in the second as June tied the game at 23 with a three in the second quarter. After June's three, Mount Aloysius took over. They went on a 22-4 scoring run to close out the half, playing well on both sides of the ball and ended the half with a 45-27 lead.
D'Youville kept up with the scoring pace of Mount Aloysius to begin the third quarter. However the Mounties began to pull away even more as they grew their lead to 21 after 1:20 of play. That lead continued to grow to 24 at 57-33 halfway through the third, but then neither team would score for over two minutes before Simone made a free throw with 2:48 remaining in the quarter. Two more Simone free throws with 0:21 on the clock in the third brought the game back under a 20-point deficit for the Spartans before the quarter ran out with the Mounties leading 57-39 after three.
In the fourth quarter, the Mount Aloysius lead was just too much to come back from for D'Youville. The Spartans made it a 16-point game early, but the Mounties were then to make it a 27-point game with under five left in regulation. Mount Aloysius would go on to close out the game, defeating D'Youville 81-49.
Alton led the team with 12 points and five rebounds in the game, with Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) also grabbing five boards. June recorded five rebounds as well, scoring 11 points. Magee and Simone each had six points, while Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) scored three with four rebounds. Brianna Dotterweich (Depew, NY/Depew) had five points and Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) scored four.
The next game for the women comes this Monday, December 4 as they travel to Buffalo State. Tip-off against the Bengals is 6:00pm.
