D'Youville Loses Non-Conference Game to Buffalo State

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team lost their final non-conference game of 2017 on Monday evening with a 73-53 loss to the Buffalo State Bengals.

Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) gave the Spartans the lead right off the tip, drilling a three just 0:17 into the game. It would take the Bengals nearly about a minute and-a-half to catch up, tying the game at three before Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) hit back-to-back threes, giving D'Youville a 9-3 lead. As the quarter progressed, the women stayed red-hot from three as Magee added two more threes for a 15-11 advantage. To close the quarter, Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) both made layups, putting the Spartans up 19-16 after the first.

Buffalo State tied the game at 19 early in the second quarter, but D'Youville would answer with two layups to put the team back up by four. With 4:23 remaining in the half, the Bengals tied the game and then took the lead just a few seconds later. That lead grew to five and then seven with 0:35 leftt on the clock, but June sank a pair of free throws to close out the quarter as the Bengals led the Spartans 34-29 at the half.

D'Youville struggled offensively to start the second half. Buffalo State went on an 8-0 run in the first four minutes of the third quarter, pushing their lead to 42-29 over the Spartans. Despite falling behind by 13, D'Youville began to close the gap. The women scored six unanswered points of their own to make it a seven-point game. However the Bengals went on a 7-2 run to close out the third and led 50-37 heading into the fourth quarter.

It wasn't before long that the Spartans once again got the game to within single-digits. CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) hit a pair of free throws to make the score 50-41, but Buffalo State then went on a 10-2 run to push the gap to 17. With 3:30 to go in regulation, the Spartans were able to pull back to within 11, but the Bengals went on another run as they outscored D'Youville 11-2 and won the game 73-53.

Smith had another strong outing for the women, recording 13 points and 10 rebounds for first double-double of the season. Magee added 12 points by going 4-8 from the three, adding three rebounds, three assists, and three steals. June led all reserves with 10 points and five rebounds, while Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) added four points. Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) scored four points with four rebounds.

The next game for the women is the final of 2017 as D'Youville travels to Pitt.-Greensburg on Saturday, December 9. Game time against the Bobcats is 3:00pm.
