Greensburg, PA – The D'Youville women's basketball team picked up there second conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats by the final score of 53-50.
D'Youville's juniors had a significant impact on offense in the first quarter as Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore), Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg), and Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) combined for the first 10 points for the Spartans. Their three-point lead then grew to seven as Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) and Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) hit back-to-back threes, giving the women a 16-9 lead. Greensburg closed out the first quarter strong as they erased D'Youville's seven-point advantage with seven consecutive points of their own, ending the quarter tied with the Spartans 16-16.
Defensively, D'Youville was outstanding in the second quarter. They didn't allow the Bobcats to score for the first 8:50 of play as June sank four free throws to go with a Sara Field (Durhamvile, NY/VVS) free throw and an Evans layup to give the Spartans a 23-16 lead. Greensburg was able to finally break their scoring drought with a pair of threes in the final 1:10, but June put in the final bucket of the half, sending D'Youville into the half leading 25-22.
The Spartans continued to play well on both ends of the court in the third quarter. D'Youville limited Greensburg to just a point through the first 7:48 of play in the third. During that span, the women built up a 19-point lead with points coming from several players. Alton had seven points, while Evans had six. June added three with Smith and CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) each scoring two. Free throws from June and Briana Dotterweich (Depew, NY/Depew) closed out the third for both teams, sending D'Youvile into the fourth with a 47-31 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Greensburg woke up. After just over two minutes of play, the Bobcats made it a seven-point game with nine unanswered points. After an Alton layup, Greensburg scored 10 consecutive points without a response from the Spartans to take their first lead of the game at 50-29 with 1:49 remaining in regulation. However on the next possession, Smith would score to give D'Youville the lead right back. With 0:13 to go in the game, Magee made two huge free throws to increase the lead to three. A last second three from Greensburg was off the mark and the Spartans held on to earn their second conference victory of the season, defeating the Bobcats 53-50.
"We got shots we wanted down the stretch that didn't fall," said head coach Dan Glover. "Our team defense in the final minute and clutch free throw shooting from Magan Magee helped us pull out the win. I'm proud of how we responded to adversity and kept battling."
Three players scored in double-figures for the Spartans in their victory. June, Alton, and Evans each scored 12 points, with Evans grabbing four rebounds. Magee had five rebounds and five points, while Howard led the team with six rebounds. June had team highs with three steals and three assists, while Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) had a steal and Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) chipped in with a pair of rebounds.
D'Youville will be off until the New Year when the get back to game action against Alfred State on Thursday, January 4. Game time against the Pioneers is 6:00pm in the College Center Gym.
