Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team dropped their first game of the New Year on Thursday evening, falling to the Alfred State Pioneers by the final score of 70-48.
D'Youville was very successful on offense in the first quarter, taking a 9-2 lead over Alfred State in the first three minutes. Alfred State came back in the next several minutes to tie the game at 11-11, eventually taking the lead at the 4:10 mark of the quarter. The Pioneers grew their lead to four before Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) made a layup with less than a minute remaining in the quarter as the Spartans trailed after one 17-15.
Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) each scored in the first 1:02 of the second to tie the game at 19. Smith and Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) scored back-to-back baskets just a few minutes later to put D'Youville back up by four. Alfred State tied the game once again, but June scored a layup to give the women a two-point lead for nearly two minutes. June's basket with 4:42 remaining in the half would be the final points for the Spartans as they trailed 32-25 at halftime.
The Spartans began the third by scoring seven unanswered points to tie the game at 32-32. With Smith tying the game again at 34, the score remained tied at 34 for over the next two minutes. Alfred State took the lead at the 4:59 mark of the quarter and outscored the Spartans 15-3 throughout the remainder of the quarter, leading D'Youville 49-37 after three.
Alfred State was able to keep their distance from the Spartans in the fourth quarter. Their lead grew to 16 with 7:08 remaining in the game and then to 19 a few minutes later. The Pioneers closed out the game with their lead intact over D'Youville, winning the game by the final of 70-48.
Smith had another strong performance for the women, leading the team with 17 points. CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) had a good game on the boards, grabbing a team high eight rebounds. June added 11 points in the contest while Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) led the team with four assists. In total, the women had nine different players score.
Callie Rapant (Alexandra Bay, NY/Lafargeville), Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton), Morgan Lehman (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove), and Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) were each effective on the glass in the time they saw on the court. Briana Dotterweich (Depew, NY/Depew) and Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) each grabbed four rebounds off the bench while Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) added two points and Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) had three.
The next game for the women comes this weekend on Saturday, January 6 at Franciscan. Game time is 3:00pm.
