Greensburg Comes from Behind to Defeat D'Youville in Overtime

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team lost a tough overtime game to the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats Saturday afternoon by the final score of 78-76.

D'Youville controlled the game at both ends of the floor in the first quarter. The Spartans led 11-0 through the first 5:37 of play until the Bobcats scored on a layup for their first points of the game. Following a Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) layup, the Spartans grew their lead to 12 with 2:29 to go in the quarter, but the Bobcats added one final bucket in the first and they trailed 17-7 after one.

Increasing their lead to 11 at 21-10 1:25 into the second, Greensburg slowly started to position themselves back into the game. The Bobcats trailed by one at 21-20, but the Spartans were able to score five unanswered points to make their lead six. In the final minute of the half, D'Youville had a six point lead that was trimmed to three as Greensburg went into the half trailing 30-27.

It wasn't before long that the Bobcats took the lead from the Spartans in the third quarter. Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VV) made a layup to give D'Youville a five point lead before Greensburg hit back-to-back threes for a 33-32 lead. The two teams traded the lead three times in the next several minutes and remained within one or two possessions of each other through to the 1:29 mark where the Spartans took an eight point lead. They then made it a 10-point lead after a Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) jumper. However the Bobcats would reach a single-digit deficit as the quarter closed and trailed 47-39.

Greensburg saved their best offensive quarter for last. The Spartans had a five-point lead with 5:57 to go in regulation and the Bobcats continued to chip away as they eventually tied the game at 56-56 with 4:50 to go. After the Bobcats took the lead at 61-59 on a three with 2:22 remaining, CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) made a layup with 1:54 to tie the game at 61-61. Howard's layup would be the final basket of regulation as the two teams headed into overtime.

The Bobcats took the early lead in OT and held as much as a five-point lead before the Spartans pulled to within three on a Briana Dotterweich (Depew, NY/Depew) jumper. Smith and June then hit four total foul shots on back-to-back possessions to put D'Youville out front at 74-73 with 1:09 to go in OT. On three straight possessions with under a minute to go before Greensburg took a 78-76 lead on a made three. The Bobcats missed several free throws down the stretch to keep the game close, but D'Youville was unable to take advantage as they fell 78-76 in overtime.

Field recorded her first career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds in the game. Smith led the team with 20 points while June scored 18 and Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) scored six points with a team high 14 rebounds. Off the bench, Dotterweich scored seven points while Howard narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

The next game for the women comes on Sunday, January 28 as they host the Penn State-Altoona Lions at 3:00pm.
