Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball lost to the Penn State-Altoona Lions Sunday afternoon by the final score of 90-54.
Tied at five in the first three minutes, Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) broke the tie with a layup and Briana Dotterweich (Depew, NY/Depew) made the score 9-5 with 6:17 to go in the first. For the next four minutes, the Spartans were unable to find the bottom of the net until Dotterweich scored on a layup with 2:11 to go in the quarter and D'Youville trailed 15-11. Each team would add several points in the final two minutes and the Lions led 21-16 after one.
The second quarter was where Altoona took over the game. They outscored the Spartans 24-5 through 6:31 of the second quarter to take a 45-21 lead. Altoona had their highest scoring quarter of the game by scoring 29 points compared to D'Youville's 10 and the Lions took a 50-26 lead into the half.
D'Youville came out in the third quarter and was much more effective on offense. They scored 17 points, their highest scoring quarter of the game and stayed with the Lions. However in the fourth quarter, Altoona continued to pour it on and extended their lead, going on to win the game 90-54.
Dotterweich led the team with nine points in her first start of the season. Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal), Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore), and Smith each had eight points with Evans grabbing a team high 10 boards. Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) led the team with six assists and Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) scored six points off the bench. Callie Rapant (Alexandra Bay, NY/Lafargeville) grabbed two rebounds in a season high six minutes.
The next game for the women comes this Wednesday, January 31 as they travel to Pitt.-Bradford to play at 8:00pm.
