Bradford, PA – The D'Youville women's basketball team suffered a loss in their first game of a three-game road trip on Wednesday evening, falling to the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers 80-69.
After leading 4-0 in the first quarter, the Spartans fell behind to the Panthers 7-4 before Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) hit a three to tie the game at 7-7. Bradford was able to take a one-possession lead as they led 13-10 with 4:33 to go in the first. The Panthers went on a 10-3 run to close out the first quarter, leading 23-13.
The Spartans began the second quarter on an 8-0 run with all eight points coming from Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS). D'Youville came back to tie the game at 26-26 on a three just under four minutes into the second and then took the lead 31-30 with 3:14 to go in the half. Each time Bradford tied the game up as the half went on, the Spartans would answer to retake the lead. However with 0:06 to go in the half, Bradford took a one-point lead on a three to lead 44-43 at the half.
Briana Dotterweich (Depew, NY/Depew) began the second half with a pair of free throws to give D'Youville the lead back. However the Panthers would take the lead back on the next possession and begin to separate themselves from the Spartans. With 4:47 to go in the third, Bradford went up 56-48 and increased their lead to 10 just two minutes later. At the end of the third, D'Youville still trailed by 10 at 62-52.
Half way through the fourth, CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) made it a six-point game with the Spartans trailing 67-61. Five unanswered points from the Panthers rebuilt the Bradford lead and they led by 13 with 1:58 to go in regulation. That left too little time for the Spartans to come back as they fell to Pitt.-Bradford by the final score of 80-69.
Four women scored in double-figures for the Spartans. Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) scored a team high 17 points while adding six rebounds and four assists. Alton had a very good all-around game as she scored 11 points with a team high eight rebounds and six assists. Smith scored 12 points with seven boards and Field added 11 points with six rebounds.
Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) and Dotterweich each had six points in the game. In total, eight Spartans scored for D'Youville.
The next game for the women comes this Saturday, February 3 as they travel to Penn State-Altoona to play the Lions at 3:00pm.
