Altoona, PA – The D'Youville women's basketball team suffered their second loss of the season to the Penn State-Altoona Lions on Saturday afternoon, falling by the final score of 90-67.
It was a very big offensive quarter for both of the teams in the first quarter as the two teams combined for 51 points. Altoona led 8-4 through 2:28 of action before D'Youville pulled to within two with a Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) jumper and made the game 11-9. The Spartans tied the game a few minutes later on a Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) three, but the Lions would then go on to open up a five-point lead. That lead grew to seven with under a minute to go in the first, but CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) hit a pair of free throws and D'Youville trailed 28-23 after one.
Altoona began the second quarter with six unanswered points to open up an 11-point lead. The Spartans pulled back to a seven-point deficit with just over five minutes remaining in the half but as the quarter went on, the Lions were able to pull away slightly and increase their lead to 13 and would go into halftime up 12 at 49-37.
Despite hovering around a 10-point deficit, the Spartans were not able to make the Altoona lead single-digits. D'Youville would go on a cold streak for over three minutes in the third quarter and would fall behind by 20 to the Lions as Altoona led 64-44. That lead grew to 21 by the end of third and the Lions were ahead 70-49 after three.
The Spartans again went cold from the field for the first 2:17 of the fourth and final quarter, failing to score until Briana Dotterweich (Depew, NY/Depew) layup. Altoona continued to hold their lead over D'Youville throughout the remainder of regulation, defeating the Spartans by the final of 90-67.
Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) led the team with 15 points and four assists while Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) had a team high nine rebounds. Field added 14 points and six rebounds with Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) scoring eight points off the bench. Howard added five points and seven rebounds in the game.
The next game for the women will come this Wednesday, February 7 as they head to Hilbert to play the Hawks at 8:00pm.
