Offensive Struggles Hurt Spartans in Loss at Hilbert

Hamburg, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team lost to the Hilbert Hawks Wednesday by the final score of 61-42.

It was a slow game on offense in the first quarter. Hilbert went up 6-0 before Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) scored the Spartan's first basket of the game nearly two minutes in. Stuck on two points for just about four minutes, D'Youville was able to keep the Hawk's offense to just eight points as they pulled to within two after Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) hit two free throws. The Spartans trailed 10-8 and then tied the game at 10-10 with 0:47 to go in the first before Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) gave D'Youville the lead off a steal and then layup with 0:02 to go, giving the Spartans a 12-10 lead after one.

The Spartan's offense stalled in the second quarter. They were outscored 25-4 as Hilbert got out to a big lead at the half, 35-16.

In the third quarter, D'Youville's offense was still unable to find any traction. They were outscored 18-7 as the Hawks took a 53-23 advantage into the fourth quarter.

As the fourth quarter began, the Spartans began to finally get it going. Six different players for D'Youville scored, including six for Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and five from June. The Spartans outscored the Hawks by 11 in the fourth, but it was not enough to get D'Youville back in the game as they lost by the final 61-42.

June led the team with 12 points in the game; while Evans had a team high six rebounds. CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) scored a team high seven points off the bench as Kellner grabbed five rebounds to lead all reserve payers.

The next game for the women comes this Saturday, February 10 as they will host Franciscan at 3:00pm.
