Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team suffered a loss to the Franciscan Barons on Saturday afternoon by the final score of 65-57.
D'Youville struggled mightily in the first quarter, failing to score until a Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) made jumper with 3:00 to go. The Spartans would get it going late as they trailed Franciscan by nine at 18-9 after one.
Franciscan held a double-digit lead through most of the second quarter. However for over four minutes, the Barons were stuck on 23 points, giving the Spartans an opportunity to get back in the game. D'Youville was unable to capitalize on the opportunity until June made it an eight-point game with 2:36 to go in the half, but Franciscan increased their lead to 11 and led 34-23 at the half.
The third quarter was the best for the Spartans on both ends of the court. After Franciscan went up by 15 at 38-23, D'Youville went on a 12-0 run to draw to within three at 38-35. June made it a one-score game after a layup with 2:34 to go in the third, but Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) drilled a three on the team's next possession to give the women their first lead of the game. The two teams would trade baskets through to the end of the quarter but D'Youville would lead 45-44 at the end of three.
It took 0:14 into the fourth before the Barons retook the lead just for the Spartans to take it back on another Alton three. For the next several minutes, the two teams were extremely competitive as they went back and forth until the Barons took a 54-52 lead. Franciscan then scored the next six points to build an eight-point lead over the Spartans and then made it an 11-point lead with under a minute to go as they went on to defeat the Spartans 65-57.
June led the team 16 points and five assists while Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) had 10 points and a team high 10 rebounds for a double-double, adding four assists. Alton scored eight points with three steals and three assists. Briana Dotterweich (Depew, NY/Depew) scored three points but grabbed seven rebounds with three assists. Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) scored six points with eight rebounds.
The women will host their final home game of the season on Wednesday, February 14 as the Medaille Mavericks visit to play at 8:00pm.
