Pittsburgh, PA - The D'Youville women's basketball team ended their season on Saturday afternoon by suffering a loss to the La Roche Redhawks 71-55.
After scoring their first basket 0:45 into the game, D'Youville would struggle from the field for the next four minutes as they trailed 9-3. With less than a minute to go in the quarter, Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) hit a free throw to give the Spartans eight points and the women ended the first trailing 20-8.
The team's offensive struggles carried over to the second quarter. Their deficit grew to 17 and then 20 at the end of the quarter, but Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) scored nine points in the second to lead the Spartans. Going into the half, D'Youville was behind 39-19.
D'Youville came alive in the third quarter and put themselves back in the game. June continued to carry the offense and dominated the third quarter, scoring 13 of the first 15 points in the quarter, all which came in the first 4:08 of the third. Her scoring outburst pulled D'Youvlle within nine and a Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) jumper decreased the deficit to seven. However the Redhawks were able to push their lead to double-digits before the quarters end as they led 51-40.
La Roche got their offense going once again in the fourth. The Redhawks outscored the Spartans 20-15, but June again led the team in scoring in the quarter with seven points. At the end of the game, the Spartans would fall 71-55.
June was outstanding in the game, scoring a career high 29 points. CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) grabbed a team high eight boards, followed by Evans and Smith. Smith was second on the team with nine points with Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) scoring six with five rebounds and a team high three assists.
Briana Dotterweich (Depew, NY/Depew) recorded a team high three steals and Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) tied for second with two. Callie Rapant (Alexandra Bay, NY/Lafargeville) played quality minutes for the women with Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) each had two boards as Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) scoring a pair of points.
