Buffalo, NY - The Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) released their women's basketball preseason poll on Monday afternoon with the D'Youville women's basketball team expected to compete a for a playoff position.
D'Youville finished 2017-18 as the ninth in the AMCC and have been predicted to finish in the same position this season. The women finished the regular season with a 4-14 conference record and a 5-20 overall record. Two of the team's conference wins came over the Penn State-Behrend Lions, a playoff team last season and a projected playoff team this season. The Spartans battled hard in numerous games last season with a young team and are equipped with experienced veterans to go with talented young players to compete in the AMCC this season.
A pair of seniors have been highlighted as players to watch this season for the Spartans. Point guard Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) returns to lead the team in 2018-19 as the team's floor general and captain while guard/forward Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) will look to add additional scoring, rebounding, and leadership as a captain as well.
June led the team in scoring in 2017-18 (11.2 PPG), was second in minutes (27.3 MPG), assists (2.1 APG), and steals (1.1 SPG) while finishing fourth in FG% (37.1). Monica recorded 16 games of double-figure scoring to lead the team on offense and will look to have a repeat performance this season.
Smith led the team in rebounding in 2017-18 (6.3 RPG), was second scoring (9.8 PPG) and FG% (40.2%), third in assists (1.9 APG), and fourth in steals (0.9 SPG). In all competitions, Jordan tallied 10 games of double-figure scoring and led the team with two double-doubles. Her impact on the team will be expected to increase in her final season with the team at both ends of the court.
The 2017-18 champion Hilbert Hawks are pegged as the team to beat once again. Also in the top six are the top six teams from last season in Pitt.-Bradford (2), La Roche (3), Penn State-Behrend (4), Mount Aloysius (5), and Medaille (6).
The full preseason poll - including top 10 ranking, players to watch, and preseason awards - can be found on the AMCC website.
D'Youville will begin their season this Saturday, November 10 as they travel to Wells to play at 1:00pm.
