Aurora, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team captured their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Wells Express 74-69.
Wells held the lead over the Spartans nearly half way through the half by one after a pair of Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) free throws. Smith continued to keep D'Youville in the game against the Express after a made layup with 3:12 to go in the first to tie the game at 11-11. A Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) made free throw gave the Spartans a lead but Wells went ahead again to lead 17-14 through one quarter.
As the second quarter got underway, the Express maintained their lead and doubled it to a 22-16 lead with just over two minutes off the clock in the quarter. The lead was extended to 10 but with 4:38 to go in the half Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) cut the deficit to four with a pair of free throws. Alexandra McBride (Elma, NY/Iroquois) tied the game at 32-32 with 2:41 to go but the Express would retake the lead and hold onto it until the halftime horn, leading after one half 38-36.
D'Youville came out in the second half to take the lead and then went up by six one back-to-back threes for a 46-40 advantage. The Spartans extended their lead to eight before Wells came back to trail 50-48. Eight consecutive points from Hore kept the team out front as they closed out the third quarter ahead by the score of 58-53.
A pair of Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) free throws put the team up by seven at 60-53 with a McBride layup putting the Spartans up by a game-high 11 points with 5:39 to go in the game. With just over two minutes to go in the game, D'Youville continued to maintain an eight-point advantage. The Express drew close as they were within six, but free throws from Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) and Hore iced the game for the Spartans as they won their season opener 74-69.
"I was really happy with our resilience and team effort today," said head coach Dan Glover. "We stuck together and played team basketball. It feels good to start the season out with a win. We will celebrate it, learn from it, build from it and get ready for the next one."
In her first career game, Hore scored a team high 20 points with 12 rebounds for her first career double-double. June and Alton each had 14 points with five rebounds and Smith added 10 points with six rebounds. Evans had 12 rebounds in the game with McBride scoring a team high seven points off the bench.
The next game for the women will come this Monday, November 12 as they host Elmira at 6:00pm for their home opener.
