Women's Basketball Falls to Elmira at Home

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season on Monday evening, falling to the visiting Elmira Soaring Eagles by the final score of 79-63.

Elmira began the game with a 10-0 lead after just over three minutes of play, but the Spartans fought back as they trailed by three at 12-9 with 4:56 to go in the quarter. The Soaring Eagles maintained their lead over D'Youville as they increased it to eight and then 10 by the end of the quarter, leading the Spartans 24-14 after 10 minutes.

The Soaring Eagles extended their lead to 15 in the second quarter and then 19 with 6:02 remaining in the half. D'Youville began to chip away at Elmira, but they still trailed by double-digits at half by the score of 46-32.

Quarter number three didn't see the first basket scored until two minutes in, but it was a basket that helped spark some offense from the Spartans. D'Youville pulled to within eight with a made Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) jumper with 4:06 left in the third. Elmira would go back up to a double-digit lead, but the Spartans would not go away as they made it an eight point game at 53-45 at the end of the third.

It took only 1:51 into the fourth when the Spartans would close the gap to one basket as they trailed 54-51 on a Hore made three. However, the Soaring Eagles would immediately fight back to score 16 of the next 20 points and take a 70-55 lead with under four minutes remaining in regulation. The big offensive push in the fourth would be too much for D'Youville to overcome as they fell to Elmira 79-63.

For the second consecutive game, Hore led the team in scoring. She posted her second straight performance of at least 20 points with 21, adding five assists and four steals. Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) added 14 points to go with eight rebounds while Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) was one-point shy of a double-double with nine points and a team high 10 rebounds.

Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) led the team with five points off the bench while Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) added eight points. Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) chipped in with six points, three rebounds, and two assists.

The next game for the women will come this Friday, November 16 as they travel to play Brockport in the Brockport Tournament at 7:00pm. D'Youville will then play day two of the Brockport Tournament on Saturday against an opponent to be announced.
