Spartans Fall to Golden Eagles to Open Brockport Tip-Off Tournament

Brockport, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team suffered their first road loss of the season on Friday evening, falling to the host Brockport Golden Eagles 85-74 in the first game of the Brockport Tip-Off Tournament.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead over the Spartans as they led 6-5 after a Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) made jumper. Brockport would then go on a 6-0 run after Evans' bucket, but D'Youville made it a four-point game at 13-9 following a Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) made free throw. As the quarter went on, Brockport extended their lead to double-digits and held that lead through to the end of the first as they were ahead of the Spartans 24-13.

An 11-point deficit grew to 15 nearly four minutes into the second as the both teams would then go cold from the field for the next two minutes until a Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) jumper to make the score 30-17. D'Youville would chip away at the lead as they trailed by 11 with 0:26 following a Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) three, but the Golden Eagles responded with a three of their own and they led at halftime 40-26.

To begin the third, the Spartans were within a basket of cutting the lead to single digits after Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) led off the half with five consecutive points. However, Brockport again began to pull away. The Golden Eagles were able to regain their 15-point advantage, extending it to 17 with 2:16 remaining in the quarter and maintaining the same lead after a layup, leading at the end of the quarter 65-48.

D'Youville brought the Brockport lead back down to 11 with 6:21 to go in the game, then cutting the lead to nine on a Hore made layup. While the Spartans continued to battle, they were unable to get any closer than the nine-point deficit as they went on to lose the game 85-74.

Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) led the team in scoring with 21 points, followed by Smith with 17 points and seven rebounds. Hore continued her impressive start to her Spartan career with 13 points and team highs with eight rebounds and six assists.

Off the bench, Riedel led the team with nine points and four rebounds. Evans scored eight points while Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster), Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal), and Field each scoring two. Alexandria McBride (Elma, NY/Iroquois) grabbed a rebound while Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) added two. Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) saw quality minutes in the game.

The Spartans will battle Morrisville State tomorrow for day two of the Brockport Tip-Off Tournament at 2:00pm.
