Brockport, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team bounced back on Saturday afternoon with several big-time performances, defeating the Morrisville State Mustangs to close out the Brockport Tip-Off Tournament by the score of 74-63.
Morrisville knocked down a three to open the scoring and would score 11 of the first 15 points for an 11-4 lead just over three minutes in. Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) would then score five consecutive points to make it a two-point game, but the Mustangs would regain a four-point advantage by the end of the quarter to lead 19-15.
The Spartans closed the gap to two with a pair of baskets to begin the second quarter. Morrisville would answer each time D'Youville pulled to within a bucket, but the Spartans would start to click as halftime drew closer. Down by five, Hore made back-to-back layups to pull the Spartans to within one at 31-30. As the teams went back and forth, Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) made two jumpers to tie the game as Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) made a layup with 0:33 remaining in the half to give D'Youville their first lead at 36-34. Hore hit the third three of the quarter following threes from both Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) and Riedel as the Spartans opened up a 58-41 advantage over Morrisville. The Mustangs scored the final four points of the third, but D'Youville was dominant at both ends of the floor as they outscored the Mustangs 19-11 in the third, leading 58-45 after three.
D'Youville continued to control the game, maintaining their double-digit lead until Morrisville made it a nine-point game with 5:30 left in regulation. The Mustangs closed the gap to seven at 61-54, but the Spartans were able to keep their opponent from getting within a basket of the lead as Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) converted a key and-one in the final two minutes to go with an Evans layup to clinch the game for D'Youville by the final score of 74-63.
Evans and Hore were the leaders for the Spartans in the game as both posted double-doubles. With a team-high 24 points to go with 10 rebounds, Evans recorded her first double-double of the season and set a new career high in points. Meanwhile, Hore stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points with 14 rebounds, eight assists, seven steals, and four blocks – all team highs.
