Steubenville, OH – The D'Youville women's basketball team won their first conference game of the season on Saturday afternoon by defeating the host Franciscan Barons by the final score of 64-47.
D'Youville took the early lead over Franciscan at 6-4 following a Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) layup just over four minutes into the game. The Barons would then take over the lead and go ahead by four at 13-8 over the Spartans. They would then increase their lead to 15-8, but the Spartans would score the next five points – including a Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) three – to put D'Youville down by two at the end one at 15-13.
The second quarter was where the Spartans took over the game. Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) started the scoring with a three to give D'Youville the lead back at 16-15. Franciscan pulled back to within three as the score was 22-19, but the Spartans would record 13 of the next 15 points as they built a double-digit lead at 35-21. The Barons would score a layup in the final minute of the half, but they still trailed by double-digits as D'Youville led 35-23 at halftime.
Franciscan pulled back to within six to open up the third, but the Spartans would answer with 10 consecutive points to open up their largest lead of the game at 45-29. As the quarter went on, D'Youville was able to maintain their double-digit lead despite pressure from the Barons. Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) capped off the scoring for the women in the third as she hit a jumper with 0:03 to go, putting D'Youville ahead 53-40.
Only five points were scored in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, but the Spartans remained ahead 55-43. As the end of the game drew closer, the Barons were unable to bring their deficit under double-digits as the Spartans would go on to win the game 64-47.
Hore was the leading scorer, rebounder, and playmaker for the women with 14 points, 17 rebounds, and seven assists. It was Hore's third double-double of the season as she also added two steals.
Alton added 12 points with Wozniak scoring a career high 11 off the bench. Evans added eight points while Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) scored nine with four rebounds, two assists, and three points. Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) tallied four points with three rebounds.
Alexandria McBride (Elma, NY/Iroquois), Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville), and Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) all saw valuable minutes in the game. Field scored six points with four rebounds.
The next game for the women comes next Saturday, December 8 at home as they host the La Roche Redhawks at 2:00pm.
