Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team fell in their final conference game before break on Saturday afternoon, going down to the La Roche Redhawks 68-55.
It was a low scoring affair through the first several minutes of the game. After 4:32 of play, La Roche was up 8-3 over D'Youville before the Spartans came back to trail by three after a Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) made layup. With 2:28 to go in the quarter, both teams would pick up their offense and combine for 13 points that would close out the quarter as La Roche led 15-11 after one.
The Spartans would make the game even more interesting to start the second, tying the game after back-to-back layups from Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) and Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park). La Roche would score seven unanswered points to reopen their lead at 22-15 with five minutes to go in the half, but D'Youville trimmed the deficit to five. The Redhawks would go on a run late and score the final 10 points of the second to lead 33-20 at the half.
After several minutes of play in the third, D'Youville would close the gap to seven. The two teams would go back and forth with the Spartans beginning to take advantage of their height on the inside as Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) scored a layup to make it a six-point game with 2:35 in the quarter. By the end of the third, La Roche was able to rebuild their lead as they went up 49-38 with one quarter remaining in the game.
To begin the fourth, June put the Spartans back to within single digits at 49-40. As the quarter went on, the Redhawks would begin to pull away – building up a 16-point lead. La Roche would then close out the game with strong play at both ends of the court, defeating D'Youville by the final score of 68-55.
June scored a team-high 16 points in the game, adding three rebounds, two steals, and an assist. Hore added 10 points and 14 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double. She also added five assists to lead the team.
Darian Evans (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) added 11 points in the game with seven boards and Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) grabbed eight boards with five points. Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) scored five points in the game off the bench.
The next game for the women will come on Sunday, December 30 as they host Clarkson at 1:00pm.
