Spartans Fall to Golden Knights

Buffalo, NY– The D'Youville women's basketball team fell in their first game back from their break to the Clarkson Golden Knights 80-61. 

It was a slow first quarter for both teams, only having a score of 15-11, Clarkson, at the end of it. With points being traded back and forth between the two teams for the first six minutes of the game, Clarkson broke away on an and-one with a made jump shot and free throw to go ahead 11-8. The Spartans grabbed their last three points of the quarter on made foul shots by Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech).

Clarkson started the second quarter draining a three in the first ten seconds.  After another basket by the Golden Knights, Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) answered with a three of her own.  Clarkson then responded with another three, only to have Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) make two layups. The teams had another exchange of points starting with a layup by Wozniak.  The Golden Knights immediately came back with a three, followed by a three by June. With a score of 28-23, Clarkson made yet another three that was then answered by Wozniak again with a three of her own. 

Starting the second half with D'Youville down 36-30, the team could not keep the game close. After many shots made by both teams, the Golden Knights broke away from the Spartans to go ahead 61-45 at the end of the third.

Heading into the fourth quarter, the Spartans couldn't make the comeback they hoped for.  The teams traded layups, jump shots and free throws throughout the final ten minutes of the game.  Clarkson held onto to their double-digit lead to defeat D'Youville.

June scored a team-high of 16 points and added four assists, while Wozniak contributed 12 points and Hore 11 points and five rebounds.  

Senior Darian Evans (Brant, NY/ Lake Shore) added seven points, four rebounds and two blocks for the team.  Alton, Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/ VVS)Kailey Kellener (Coupeville, WA/ Coupeville), and Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/ Hilton) also put points up on the board for the squad.

D'Youville next sees action Wednesday, January 2 when they host Buffalo State in the College Center at 1:00pm.
