Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team began the new year on Wednesday afternoon by taking on local opponent Buffalo State, falling to the Bengals by in the final minutes by the final score of 74-69.
Buff. State began the game by getting out early in front of D'Youville 8-4, but the Spartans would come back to trail by two at 10-8. Minutes later, the Bengal lead grew to six once again at 14-8, but in the following minutes D'Youville would tie the game at 14-14 off a Darian Evans (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) jumper with 1:47 to go in the first. The score remained the same for the next 1:43 until a pair of Bengal free throws and Buff. State led 16-14 after one.
Within the first two minutes of the second, Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) started to catch fire from deep. She hit back-to-back threes to open up the second and give the Spartans a 20-16 lead. The two teams would then trade the lead until the Bengals went up by three at 25-22 with just over four minutes to go in the half. No more than four points would separate the teams through the remainder of the second and Buff. State would head into halftime leading 34-31.
Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) hit a three less than a minute into the third quarter to tie the game at 34-34 before the Bengals would open up a five-point lead a few minutes later. D'Youville would heat up from beyond the arc as Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) hit a pair of threes to go up by one. With 1:53 left in the quarter, June added another three to extend the D'Youville lead to five as the Spartans would lead 55-50 at the end of three.
After nearly two minutes of play in the fourth, the Bengals would retake the lead at 59-57. Over the next six minutes, the two teams would trade the lead as they went back-and-forth in a tightly contested game. With 2:31 to go in regulation, D'Youville would go up by one at 69-68. Buff. State would then score six unanswered points to close out the game as they would win the game by the final score of 74-69.
June led the way with 22 points in the game as she went 5-10 from three and 8-16 from the field. Hore added 13 points and flirted with a triple-double as she dished out nine assists and grabbed eight boards. Both Alton and Evans recorded 10 points each with Evans grabbing a team high 16 rebounds. In her first game back from injury, Smith scored 10 points off the bench with five rebounds.
The next game for the women will come this Saturday, January 5 as they host the Penn State-Altoona Lions in their first conference game of the new year at 1:00pm.
