Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team got back to their winning ways as they defeated the Penn State-Behrend Lions Wednesday evening by the final score of 80-65.
Both teams struggled to take care of the ball in the first few minutes of the game until the Spartans settled in in to take a 7-4 lead following a Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) made jumper. That lead grew to four at the 5:06 mark as Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) hit a three. Behrend would pull back to within one but Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) hit a three of her on with under two to go in the first to the tune of a 15-11. The Lions would make it up at 15-15 at the end of the first as the teams went into the second half tied.
Smith drilled her second three of the game to open up the second to put the Spartans ahead. D'Youville would go to the line early in the quarter with four consecutive points from Hore and Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) each putting a pair in. Two Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) points plus a Hore layup capped off a 13-2 run for D'Youville through the first 4:26 of action in the second. Despite a short Behrend run, the Spartans continued to pour it on at both ends of the court. After a dominant D'Youville second quarter, the Spartans were up over the Lions 39-30.
A Hore and-one capped off a 12-6 run to open of the third quarter as the Spartans opened up a 51-36 lead over the Lions through the first four minutes of play. With just over three minutes to go, D'Youville went up by 18 as Hore hit a three with Wozniak coming back on the next possession to drill a three of her own to make it a 19-point lead. Behrend would make a slight run to close out the third as they trailed 63-47.
June hit a runner in the lane to extend the lead back to 19 just north of two minutes played in the fourth. The lead grew to 20, the largest of the game for the Spartans following an Alton three with under seven to go in the game. With 5:10 to go in the game, Hore received a pass down low from Darian Evans (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) to finish an and-one, pushing D'Youville ahead by 23. The lead for the Spartans got to as much as 25 in the final quarter on their way to victory, defeating the Behrend Lions by the final score of 80-65.
Hore stuffed the stat sheet for the women with a team high 24 points, seven rebounds, and eight steals. She added five assists in 33 minutes of action. Evans led the team with a career high eight assists with seven rebounds, six blocks, and five points. Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) added 15 points in the game while Wozniak scored a team high 11 points off the bench. Smith chipped in with eight points, three rebounds, and three assists.
Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) added two points and two rebounds off the bench with Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) adding a pair. Carpenter scored four points with Alexandria McBride (Elma, NY/Iroquois) playing quality minutes and Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) scoring a point.
The next game for the women will come on the road as they take on the Mounties at Mount Aloysius at 1:00pm this Saturday, January 12.
