Cresson, PA – The D'Youville women's basketball team won their second consecutive game on Saturday afternoon by defeating the host Mount Aloysius Mounties by the final score of 70-66 in overtime.
It was a one possession game throughout the first three minutes of the game before a Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) three gave the Spartans a 10-5 advantage. The Mounties would come back with seven unanswered points and take the lead at 12-10 before Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) tied the game with a layup as 3:42 was remaining on the clock in the first quarter. Alton's layup would spark a 9-0 run for D'Youville, capped off by a Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) three for a 19-12 lead. Mount Aloysius would add three more points before the quarter was finished as the Spartans led 19-15 after 10 minutes.
D'Youville struggled on offense in the second as they were outscored 12-2 though the first seven minutes of play in the quarter. With the Mounties building a lead as large as seven at 30-23, D'Youville was able to keep the score close despite not scoring much. Smith made a layup with 0:05 to go in the half, drawing the Spartans to within five as they trailed Mount Aloysius 30-25 at halftime.
The Spartans got to the free throw line early in the second half and cut their deficit to two at 33-31. Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) was able to bring D'Youville within one on a made jumper with 3:17 to go in the quarter as the women continued to try to regain a piece of the lead. A Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) layup brought the team to within one before a Mountie three at the end of quarter as Mount Aloysius went into the fourth quarter leading 43-41.
Despite their best efforts, the Mounties could not hold off the Spartans any longer in the fourth as the women tied the game at 43-43 on a Smith jumper but then took the lead back on a pair of Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) free throws with 8:04 to go in regulation. However, Mount Aloysius would come right back after they fell behind by one to open up a four and then five-point lead over the Spartans.
Down by six with 3:13 to go, D'Youville would continue to fight to stay in the game. With under a minute to go, Hore would make a pair of layups to tie the game at 59-59 with the second of the two layups coming with 0:10 to go in regulation. The team's defense would hold strong and the two teams would head to overtime tied at 59.
Going up by four to start overtime, the Mounties appeared to be back in control of the game. June would knock down back-to-back threes as the team went up 65-64. Aloysius would answer with a three to take a 66-65 lead but Hore would drill a three of her own for a 68-66 advantage with 0:25 remaining in the game. Hore would then go to the line and sink two free throws to seal the deal for the Spartans as the Spartans would win their second conference game in a row, defeating the Mounties 70-66.
Hore had another outstanding game for D'Youville. The exciting freshman scored a new career high 26 points after a career high 24 points on Wednesday. She also led the team with 17 rebounds, tying her career high. June and Smith each tallied 11 points with Smith grabbing nine boards and tying the team high in assists with four. Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) grabbed five boards with four assists and seven points.
Alton tallied six points and seven rebounds as Field had five points and five rebounds off the bench. Carpenter and Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) each had a pair of points with Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) and Alexandra McBride (Elma, NY/Iroquois) played quality minutes for the women.
The next game for the women will come on Monday, January 14 as they play the Mavericks at Medaille at 6:00pm.
