Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team suffered a tough loss Monday evening, falling to the rivaled Medaille Mavericks by the final score of 61-58.
D'Youville held a 2-0 lead for the first several minutes of the game before the two offenses were able to get going. Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) would convert an and-one 5:20 into the first, putting the Spartans up 10-4. Medaille would take over the lead at 13-12 before a Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) made a jumper to give the women the lead back. The Mavericks would then take the lead back before a Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) made layup to give the Spartans the 16-15 lead after one quarter.
Medaille went on a 12-2 run to open up the second quarter to put D'Youville behind in the game 27-18. Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) would make a jumper with 4:25 to go in the half to make the score 27-20 and the score would remain there for nearly the next two minutes. Another Carpenter basket would put the Spartans behind by three at 27-24, but the Mavericks would then extend their lead to five moments later. In the final minute of the half, Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) would score four points as D'Youville trailed 31-28 at halftime.
The lead closed to one for the Mavericks after a Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) made jumper 2:34 into the third. After a Medaille made jumper with seven minutes to go in the quarter, neither team would score for over two minutes until June tied the game with a made three. Evans would then give the Spartans the lead at 39-37 nearly two minutes later with a made jumper of her own before Medaille would score four of the final six points of the third as the game was tied at 41-41 after three quarters.
An eight-point advantage opened up rather quickly for the Mavericks in the fourth quarter as the two teams combined for 12 points in the first minute of the fourth quarter. The two offenses would then go cold for the next five minutes as they scored a combined nine points, but the 10-point lead from Medaille would be trimmed to seven.
Two Evans made jumpers and a Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) jumper put the Spartans down by one at 57-56 with 1:28 to go in regulation. Carpenter would give D'Youville the lead on a made jumper with 0:42 remaining in the game, but Medaille would score on their next possession to regain the lead by one. The Spartans would have two chances to take the lead or tie, but the Mavericks would sink a pair of three throws late to put the game away and win 61-58.
Hore led the team with 13 points, adding seven boards, six assists, and two steals. Evans grabbed a team high 11 points to go with her 10 points as June also scored 10 points to go with six assists and four rebounds.
