Spartans Drop Close Battle at Pitt.-Bradford

Bradford, PA - The D'Youville women's basketball team fell short on the road, falling to Pitt.-Bradford 66-76. The loss drops the women to 3-5 in the AMCC and 6-9 overall.

Three Spartans led the way in points.  Monica June (Buffalo, NY/ Hutch Tech)Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/ Orchard Park), and Jordan Smith(Hamburg, NY/ Hamburg) all had 16 points for the team. June also added four rebounds with Smith adding seven, and Hore had a team high of seven rebounds and eight assists.

D'Youville started off the first quarter strong; never trailing from the start.  Darian Evans (Brant, NY/ Lake Shore) came out making her first shot in the first 23-seconds off the game.  The Panthers kept trying to take the lead, but the Spartans only let them get as close as tying.  Tied 8-8 with just over six minutes to go, June hit a three followed by a layup by Hore to go up by 5.  Trading points back and forth, Pitt.-Bradford worked their way to tie the game at 16-16 with 2:06 to go.  After a layup by Smith and an and-one at the three by Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/ Hannibal), the Spartans grabbed another four-point lead.

The second quarter was another cat and mouse game, but who was going to lead at half was still in question. The Panthers quickly overturned the 21-20 lead the Spartans had heading into the second quarter with a made layup to go up by one, but with a Hore layup the lead didn't last long.  After tying the game with 6:32 to go in the half on an and-one by Hore, the teams would exchange the lead back and forth.  Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/ Coupeville) would seal the half for the Spartans hitting a jump shot with six seconds to go.

Heading into the third quarter, Pitt.-Bradford would once again take the lead back, but not for long. After two made layups by the Panthers, June would come to make a three to tie the game, and then again to take the lead by one with 7:07 to go.  Smith and June would go on to extend the lead to five-points with the score at 47-42.  The Panthers would turn around to go on a 11-2 run to take the lead with 1:31 to go in the quarter.  D'Youville tried to make up for it, however the Panthers would end the quarter being up six-points at 57-51.

With a layup by both Smith and Alton and a three by June, the Spartans quickly took back the lead by going up 58-57.  Pitt.-Bradford would not let the team hold the lead for long, going up 68-60 with 4:10 to go in the game.  The Spartans would cut the lead down to four-points twice in the next three minutes but could not make the comeback they wanted.  D'Youville kept pushing to cut the lead until the last seconds of the game; playing aggressive defense and taking quality shots.

Helping out all over the floor was Evans, grabbing eight points, five rebounds and four assists. Alton also added four points and boards. While Kellner added three points, Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/ VVS)added two points and three rebounds, and Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/ Lancaster) added one.

The Spartans hope to break their two game losing streak this Saturday when they play Pitt.-Greensburg at home at 1pm. They then head to Greensburg, PA to face the Bobcats on their court on Monday at 1pm.
