Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team hosted the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats on a snowy Saturday afternoon, defeating the guest Bobcats in overtime by the final of 91-87.
Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) made it a 2-0 game nearly three minutes into the first quarter as both teams started off slow on offense. Greensburg would then begin to get rolling on offense as they went up 13-8 as the heated up from three and the line. A Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) offensive board and put-back would make it a three-point game at 13-10 with 1:18 to go in the first. The Bobcats would end the first with a three, making the score 16-10 at the end of one.
Greensburg began the second quarter with another three, pushing their lead to nine. The Spartans scored their first basket of the quarter on Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) layup after 2:32 of play. Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) would make back-to-back layups to make it a five-point game, but the Bobcats answered right back on their next two possessions to make it a 10-point advantage. With three free throws in the final minute of play and the Bobcats would go into the half leading 32-20.
D'Youville opened up the second half on a quick 6-0 run to cut their deficit in half. Over the next several minutes, the Bobcats would regain their composure and make it a nine-point game, but Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) would make it a seven-point game again as the Spartans trailed 39-32. With 4:04 to go in the third, Greensburg opened up their largest lead of the game at 12 with two made free throws. With just north of a minute to go in the third, the Bobcats went up by 15 before Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) drilled a three followed by a June three to make it a nine-point game after three as D'Youville trailed 60-51 after three.
Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) put in back-to-back baskets early in the fourth to make it a six-point game with the score 66-60 in favor of the Bobcats. Evans would go to the line with 4:12 to go in regulation, hitting both free throws and the Spartans were down by four. On the next possession, Alton made a layup to bring D'Youville to within a basket. After a great defensive stand, the Spartans marched right back down court as Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) hit a three and gave D'Youville the late lead at 69-68.
D'Youville would increase their fresh lead to three on a Hore made layup before Greensburg would hit a three to tie the game at 71-71 with 1:29 to go in regulation. At the 1:07 mark of the fourth, June hit a go-ahead layup to put the Spartans up by two. The Bobcats would answer with a three to go up by one within the final minute to put the pressure back on the Spartans. Smith went to the line within the final 0:30 and tied the game with a free throw. Greensburg came back and made a layup with 0:08.5 to go in regulation as the Bobcats went up 76-74. In the final, seconds, June tied the game with a layup at 76-76 and the game headed to overtime.
The Spartans went up by one after a pair of Hore free throws to begin the extra period, but Greensburg would take the lead back on their next trip down the court. Hore then gave the Spartans the lead at 85-83 with less than two to go followed by a Smith layup to make it a four-point lead. Alton then took the ball away on the defensive end and took the ball the other way with 0:55.7 to go in overtime as the Spartans led 89-83.
Again, Hore found herself at the line and sank a free throw to put the women up by five at 90-85. Greensburg came back with a layup with 0:08.8 left in the game as D'Youville was up 90-87 with possession of the ball. Hore put in another free throw to extend the lead to 91-87 as the Bobcats came back the other way but couldn't find the basket as D'Youville won the game 91-87.
All five starters scored in double-figures for the women. Hore led the way with 18 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. June tallied 17 points with a team high 10 boards and four assists. Evans added 16 points with five rebounds and four assists while Smith also recorded five rebounds and four assists, but scored 15 points. Alton chipped in with 11 points to go with five boards of her own.
Off the Wozniak and Field each chipped in with six points while Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) scored a pair with three boards. Alexandria McBride (Elma, NY/Iroquois) and Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) each played quality minutes for the women.
D'Youville will have a quick turnaround as they will play these same Bobcats on Monday, January 21 as they travel to play Greensburg in Greensburg at 1:00pm.
