Bobcats Best Spartans in Second Overtime Battle

Greensburg, PA – The D'Youville women's basketball played their second overtime game against Pitt.-Greensburg in three days on Monday afternoon, this time falling to the Bobcats by the final score of 80-70.

D'Youville fell behind 6-4 in the early minutes of the first quarter, but a Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) three put the Spartans ahead by one. A Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) layup followed by two Bobcat free throws made the score 9-8 in favor of the Spartans – which would be the score for the next two-plus minutes. Five consecutive points by Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) put the Spartans up by three, but Greensburg would take over the lead and hold onto to the end of the first, leading 19-18 after 10 minutes of play.

Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) scored the first four points of the second for the Spartans to put them back up by one 1:33 into the quarter. Greensburg recaptured the lead and went up 26-23 with 6:44 to go in the half as neither team would score for nearly two minutes. Field and Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) put in six consecutive points for the women to put D'Youville back in the lead with the score 31-30, extending their lead to 33-30 with another Field layup. A pair of June free throws would cap off the scoring for the first half as the Spartans led 35-32.

Nearly two minutes into the third, Greensburg would retake the lead just for D'Youville to take it back on their next possession. The game remained tightly contested as a Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) drilled a three to put the women up three before the Bobcats tied the game again. With 2:17 remaining in the third, the Spartans built their largest lead of the game at seven with the score 47-40. In the final two minutes, the Bobcats would begin to rally as they trimmed their deficit to three, heading into the fourth quarter down 51-48.

The Spartans were able to remain their lead for a majority of the fourth quarter. Their lead was built back up to seven after a Field layup, but Greensburg made it a one-point game with 4:44 to go in regulation. With 1:47 on the clock, the lead was six for the Spartans, but the Bobcats would score the next four points to make the score 65-63 D'Youville. With just 0:02 to go in the fourth, Greensburg tied the game with a layup at 65-65, sending the two teams to overtime for the second time.

Within the first minute of overtime, Greensburg retook the lead for the first time since the third quarter. Trailing by three, the Spartans would fall behind by six after a made Bobcat three. That deficit would grow to eight and then 10 as the Spartans were unable to recover, falling to Greensburg 80-70.

Field led the way for the women with 18 huge points off the bench. Wozniak and Danielle Hore (Orchard Park ,NY/Orchard Park) each tallied 13 with Smith adding 10. Hore led the team with 15 boards while June tallied a team high eight assists. Smith contributed seven rebounds in 37 minutes of action.

The next game for the women comes on Saturday, January 26 as they play the La Roche Redhawks in Pittsburgh, PA at 2:00pm.
