Pittsburgh, PA – The D'Youville women's basketball team suffered a road loss on Saturday afternoon, falling to the La Roche Redhawks by the final score of 78-67.
La Roche built up an early lead in the first quarter as they led the Spartans 15-4 after nearly four minutes of play. D'Youville began to work their way back into the game as back-to-back layups from Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) and Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) to cut the deficit to seven. The Redhawks would answer by scoring the next six points and after one quarter of play, La Roche led 23-13.
The lead was back up to 13 after 1:46 of action in the second quarter for the Redhawks. Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) would make it a single-digit deficit after a pair of free throws several minutes later as D'Youville began to get back into the game. Trailing by six with 1:02 to go in the half, Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) hit a free throw and then a three after a La Roche layup to pull the Spartans to within five as D'Youville was down 35-30 at halftime.
Determined to regain control of the game, La Roche opened up their largest lead of the game at 14 after 2:20 of play in the third quarter. The Spartans continued to fight as they were then down by nine following a Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) free throw before the team chipped away and made it a six-point deficit after a Smith layup. In the final minute of play, Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) drilled a three as D'Youville wore La Roche all the way down to a 53-51 score. The Redhawks would add a free throw with 0:01 to go in the third as they led by a basket at 54-51 after three.
Kellner again came up big for the Spartans with a three 1:45 into the fourth as she tied the game at 55-55. D'Youville would remain within a possession for the next three minutes until the Redhawks went up by five at 62-57. La Roche would then take the ball and run with it, increasing their lead to 11. However, the Spartans would continue to fight, making it a six-point game following a Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) with 2:40 to go in the game. Unfortunately for D'Youville, they were unable to get within a possession of the lead as they fell to the Redhawks by the final score of 78-67.
Three players scored in double-figures for the Spartans; led by Smith 17 points. June added 14 points with Field scoring 13. Hore led the way for D'Youville with 12 rebounds and eight assists. Wozniak tallied seven points off the bench while Kellner scored six with four assists and three boards.
The next game for the women will come this Wednesday, January 30 as they host the Medaille Mavericks at 6:00pm.
