Spartan Women Battle Hard in Loss at Home to Panthers

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team lost a hard-fought battle to the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers on Monday evening by the final score of 68-63.

It was a defensive battle to begin the game as just six points were scored between the two teams in the first three minutes of the game. Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) would put in back-to-back layups for the Spartans followed by five consecutive points from Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) would send D'Youville up by seven at 13-6 with 4:08 to go in the first. The Panthers would then come roaring back to tie the game at 13-13 with under two to go. The Spartans would pull back out in front of the Panthers, leading 18-16 after one.

The lead grew to four for D'Youville through four minutes of play in the second. Bradford pulled to within two at 22-20 with 5:25 to go in the half, but the Panthers took the lead nearly two minutes later at 23-22. Over the next several minutes, the Panthers would continue to build momentum as they took a 30-22 advantage with 1:26 to go in the half. The Spartans would cut their deficit to five at the half, trailing the Panthers 32-27.

Back-to-back Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) layups made it a three-point game early in the third quarter, putting the Spartans behind 34-31. A Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) layup through 4:40 of the third put D'Youville within two of the lead, followed by a Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) layup on the next possession to tie the game at 36-36. Baskets were traded back and forth between the two teams, but Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) gave the women a 44-42 lead with less than two to go in the quarter. At the end of three, the two teams were battling hard and tied at 47-47.

Seven total points were scored between the two teams in the first four minutes of the fourth at the Panthers led 52-49. A Bradford layup made it a five-point lead with 4:28 to go in the fourth, but the Spartans pulled back to within three after a June made layup. Smith would add a big three as the Spartans were within one at 57-56 with less than four minutes to go in the game.

Bradford went back up by five with 2:35 left on the game clock, but a Field layup then cut it to three with 1:35 to go. Free throws from the Panthers made it a six-point advantage with slightly over a minute on the clock. Late free throws from June and Smith made it 66-61 in favor of the Panthers with 0:18.5 in regulation. Several key defensive plays from the Spartans put them down by three, but Bradford would hold on to win the game by the final score of 68-63.

Smith led the team in scoring with 23 points, adding eight boards, four steals, and two assists. Field tallied 13 points while Hore scored 11 with eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals. June scored eight with four boards and three assists. Wozniak scored six points off the bench to go with two from Carpenter.

Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) recorded seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals in the game. Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) played quality minutes in the loss.

The next game for the women comes this Wednesday, February 6 as the women travel to Penn State-Behrend to play the Lions at 6:00pm.
