Late Behrend Push Leads Lions to Victory over Spartans

Erie, PA – The D'Youville women's basketball team put forth another outstanding effort on Wednesday evening but unfortunately fell to the host Penn State-Behrend Lions by the final score of 66-61.

It was a defensive battle early in the first quarter between the conference rivals as the Spartans led 9-4 following Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) free throws after 4:47 of play in the first. Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) would add a three on the next possession for D'Youville, increasing their lead to eight. Behrend would follow up by scoring the next six points to trail by two, but Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) scored the final five points of the quarter for the Spartans as D'Youville led 19-14 after one.

Following a Lion three that made it a three-point game in the first minute of the second, D'Youville would start rolling on offense to go up by 10 at 26-16 with a Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, NY/Coupeville) three. Behrend would regain their composure and score the next eight six points to trail 26-22 with 5:16 to go in the half. The Spartan's lead went back up as they led by nine following a Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) layup, but the Lions would close the gap to five to end the second quarter as D'Youville led 35-30 at halftime.

It didn't take long for Behrend to put pressure on D'Youville in the third quarter. The Lions pulled to within one after just 1:16 of action, but then tied the game at 39 with 6:39 to go in the quarter and would then take the lead 0:20 later. The Spartans would not surrender quietly, however, as Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) converted an and-one to put the Spartans back ahead 44-43. As the quarter wore down, the two teams would continue to go back-and-forth until Hore put the team up at the end of the third with a pair of free throws, leading 51-49.

The lead grew to four quickly into the fourth quarter, but the Lions hung right with the Spartans. Behrend would tie the game at 57, but D'Youville would get back up to their three-point lead after a pair of Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) free throws with 3:16 to go in the game. With 2:09 remaining in regulation, the Lions took over the lead on a made layup. From that point on, Behrend would not surrender the lead as D'Youville fell by the final score of 66-61.

Smith led the team with 16 points, adding six rebounds, four assists, and three steals in Wednesday's loss to the Lions. Field chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds while June scored nine points with seven rebounds. Hore scored eight points with seven boards, five assists, and three steals.

Carpenter scored nine points off the bench with Kellner adding six. Alton scored three points and Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) had an assist and a rebound.

The next game for the women will come this Saturday, February 9 as they travel to Penn State-Altoona to play the Lions at 1:00pm.
