Altoona, PA – The D'Youville women's basketball team travel to play Penn State-Altoona on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Lions by the final score of 89-55.
The Lions went ahead of the Spartans 7-2 through the first three minutes-plus of the first quarter. Trailing 11-6 just a few minutes later, Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) made back-to-back layups to bring D'Youville within three at 11-8. After Carpenter's layup, Altoona would go on an 8-2 run to the quarter as they led 19-10 after one.
Nine of the first 12 points in the second quarter were scored by Altoona as they opened up a 28-13 lead. Neither team would score much over the next several minutes as they combined for just nine points to make the score 32-17 with 3:12 to go in the half. Two Alexandria McBride (Elma, NY/Iroquois) free throws made it a single-digit deficit for the Spartans as they trailed 35-26 with 0:45 left, but the Lions would score the final two baskets of the half and lead 39-26 at halftime.
Through the first three minutes of play in the third quarter, the Lions continued to pour on the offense as they outscored the Spartans 12-1 for a 51-27 lead. Altoona grew their lead further as the quarter went on, ending the third up 69-35.
D'Youville matched the offensive output of the Lions in the fourth quarter, with each team scoring 20 points. Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) and Hore scored four points each with Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) leading the way with five. Carpenter also grabbed five boards in the quarter as the game would end with the Spartans falling 89-55.
Hore led the team with 16 points, adding five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Field, Carpenter, and McBride each scored eight points in the game – a career high for McBride. Carpenter led the team with seven rebounds while Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) grabbed five boards.
Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) scored four points with four rebounds while Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) tallied three rebounds. Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) scored a pair of points with three steals. Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) recorded three rebounds in the game.
The next game for the women comes this Monday, February 11 as they host the Medaille Mavericks at 6:00pm.
