Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team picked up a crucial Buffalo Cup point on Monday evening, defeating the Medaille Mavericks by the final score of 84-71.
It was a battle from beyond the arc to begin the game. Each team hit a pair of triples from three in the first four minutes to go with layups from each squad as it was tied 8-8. The fast-paced first quarter continued as Medaille hit back-to-back threes to take the lead at 16-11 over the Spartans. Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) went to the line with 1:24 to go in the first, hitting both free throws to make it a 19-13 Medaille lead. D'Youville would score six points in the final minutes of the first, cutting the deficit to 21-19 after one quarter.
Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) drilled a three to start the second quarter, putting the Spartans right back out in front by one. Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) came down the court just a few minutes later and drilled a three, giving D'Youville a two-point lead. Medaille would come back over the next several possessions to tie the game at 29-29 with 4:47 to go in the first half as the score was then tied at 35-35 with 2:35 remaining on the clock. The Mavericks made a late layup with under 0:20 to go in the second as the two teams went into the half tied at 39-39.
D'Youville opened up the second half on fire. Three different players scored to start the half with a three from Hore as well as layups from June and Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) to make the score 46-39 in favor of the Spartans. The Mavericks didn't score their first basket of the quarter until there was less than five minutes remaining in the quarter to make it 48-41, but Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) answered with a triple to put the Spartans up 10. In the final minutes of the third, Medaille came roaring back and trailed by one at 56-55.
Medaille would take the lead in the fourth with the first three points of the quarter, leading 58-56. Smith tied the game up on a stop-and-pop with just over six minutes to go, followed by a big Kellner three to give the Spartans the lead. With 2:50 to go in the game, June went to the line and sank a free throw following a layup to put D'Youville up 71-64. Four combined free throws from Smith and Hore put the Spartans up 75-67 with under a minute to go.
Smith added two more free throws with 42.6 to go in the game, increasing the Spartan lead to 10. After exchanging free throws in the final seconds, the Spartans would come out victorious with the final score of 84-71.
Smith and June led the team with 22 points in the game, with June adding six assists and five rebounds in the game. Carpenter missed a double-double a rebound with 17 points and nine boards to go with three blocks. Hore tallied 11 points with 15 boards, seven assists, four steals, and two blocks as she played the entire game. Kellner chipped in with 10 points.
Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) earned the start in the game and recorded two assists with the start while Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) played 12 minutes. Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) scored two points in the victory.
The next game for the women comes this Wednesday, February 13 as they travel to Hilbert to play the Hawks at 6:00pm.
