Women Dominate Franciscan on Senior Day

Buffalo, NY -  The D'Youville women's basketball team ended their season with senior day on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Franciscan Barons by the final score of 82-67.

The Spartans got out to a 7-2 lead through the first four minutes of quarter number one. Four unanswered points from the Barons would make it a one-point game, but Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) drilled a three to put the Spartans back up by four. With 1:06 to go in the first, Franciscan tied it up at 12-12 and the score would remain the same at the end of one.

Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) would begin the second with a pair of free throws to put D'Youville back in the lead. A Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) layup would increase the Spartan's lead to five as the team was out front with nearly three minutes off the clock in the second. Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) would then drill back-to-back threes for D'Youville to put the women up eight. Alton would then add a layup on a nice feed from Smith to make it a 10-point lead.

Franciscan would cut their deficit to six, but a Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) layup would make it an eight-point advantage again. Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) made a layup with under a minute to go in the half as the Spartans went into halftime leading 33-23.

Back-to-back Smith baskets went with an Alton three to put the Spartans up by 12 to start the half. Franciscan would get back to a single-digit deficit after a made layup nearly half way through the third. Two Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) free throws would restore the lead to 10 for D'Youville, but the Barons would answer with an and-one to bring it to within eight. However Alton would convert an and-one of her own to make it 52-42 with just over two to go in the third. Kellner made a great hustle play in the final 0:30 of the quarter and then made a layup to increase the lead to 13. Hore would then go to the line and hit a pair of free throws, but Franciscan would answer back with a buzzer beating three to make the score 59-47 after three.

A Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) three put the Spartans up 62-49, followed by a Hore jumper to make it a 15-point advantage for the women.
