Women's Basketball Dominates in Season Opening Win

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team began the 2019-20 season with a bang on Saturday afternoon as they defeated the guest Wells Express by the final score of 80-35.

Wells got out to an early lead through the first three minutes, leading 6-2. The offenses would begin to get going as the quarter went on as Becca Krenzer (Pavilion, NY/Batavia-Notre Dame) made a layup to make it a three-point game with 1:26 to go. To end the first, the two teams would exchange baskets as the Express led 14-11 after 10 minutes of play.

The second quarter was where the Spartans would hit their stride and break the game wide open. Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) put D'Youville ahead 17-16 after just over a minute played. With 5:49 to play in the second, Wells would make a basket to trail by one at 20-19. From that point on, the Spartans would go on a 15-0 run over the next 3:30 as Sarah Wittek (Elma, NY/Iroquois) tallied eight of those points with D'Youville ahead 35-19.

As the half wore down, the Spartan offense continue to roll as an Emmalea Erlandson (West Valley, NY/Ellicottville) layup doubled up Wells with D'Youville leading 42-21. Riedel would cap off the scoring for the Spartans in the second with a three as D'Youville outscored Wells 34-11 in the second to lead 45-25 at halftime.

D'Youville further established their dominance in the third quarter, but this time on the defensive end of the court. Haley Kirisits (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and Riedel combined to score the first nine points of the quarter as the women went up 54-25 through the first 4:29 of play. Ashley Schenkel (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas), Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster), and Erlandson accounted for the final seven points of quarter as D'Youville shutout the Express in the third to lead 61-25.

In the fourth, Wells found some offense but it was much too late. Brigid McKeone (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) made three layups in the fourth with five points from Schenkel as D'Youville would cruise to their first win of the season at 80-35.

The women were outstanding at both ends of the court on Saturday afternoon, but their defense was on another level. D'Youville forced 38 turnovers in the win and held Wells to a 31.6 FG% and just two three-pointers.

On the offensive end, the Spartans shot 41.1% from the field and grabbed 19 offensive rebounds. They shot extremely well from the line as a team at 78.9%.

Riedel had an extremely effective day at both ends of the gym. The sophomore led the team with 17 points and seven steals to go with three rebounds.
