Kirisits' Double-Double Leads Women Past Cazenovia

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team improved to 2-0 this season as the Spartans took down the Cazenovia Wildcats at home Tuesday evening by the final score of 73-61.

D'Youville jumped out to a 9-3 lead following a Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) layup just over two minutes into the game. A pair of Emmalea Erlandson (West Valley, NY/Ellicottville) free throws ended the lead to 10 halfway through the first before a Wildcat three closed the gap to four with 1:22 to go in the quarter. A made jumper by Cazenovia would bring the Wildcats to within two at 17-15 after one quarter of play.

After 3:33 of play in the second, the Wildcats tied the game at 22 and then again at 24. Hore would hit a big three for the women, followed by a layup to regain the lead for D'Youville. Erlandson would cap off the scoring for both sides in the second with a made layup following an offensive rebounds, putting the Spartans up 31-27 after two. 

The Spartans came out swinging in the second half with Becca Krenzer (Pavilion, NY/Batavia-Notre Dame), Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois), and Haley Kirisits (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) tallying the first seven points of the quarter for D'Youville to go up 38-27. Cazenovia would trim their lead back to single digits as the third went on, eventually getting the score to 42-36 in favor of D'Youville with 2:52 to go in the quarter. Krenzer would make it a 10-point game before a pair of Wildcat free throws ended the third with D'Youville leading 50-42.

To begin the fourth, Cazenovia continued to press the Spartans in an attempt to get back in the lead. The Wildcats made it a five-point game at 54-49 on a made three and then followed up with a made layup to make it a three-point game. Five big points from Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and Hore gave the Spartans a cushion with 6:05 to go in the game. Carpenter then came up big for the women with a made jumper and a three to put the women up by nine as Cazenovia was unable to recover with D'Youville earning their second win of the season 73-61.

Kirisits had an outstanding second game of her career with her first career double-double. She led the team with 15 rebounds with an outstanding nine offensive rebounds to go with 15 points, two assists, and a steal. Hore led the team with 17 points to go with eight rebounds and three steals while Krenzer added 13 points and four rebounds, leading the way with three blocks.

Riedel tallied nine points with six boards and a team-high five assists. Off the bench, Sarah Wittek (Elma, NY/Iroquois) grabbed 10 rebounds to go with seven points while Carpenter also scored seven points. Erlandson scored four points with three rebounds and two blocks while Ashley Schenkel (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) had five rebounds.

Elizabeth Bradley (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) added four assists and two steals while Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) contributed quality minutes. Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) grabbed two rebounds in the win.

D'Youville will next travel to Roanoke this weekend to play in the Jim Beamer Tip-Off Tournament this Saturday, November 16 at 6:00pm. They will then play day two of the tournament on Sunday with the time and opponent to be determined.
