Hamburg, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team defeated the reigning AMCC champions on Wednesday evening, taking down the Hilbert Hawks by the final score of 60-47.
D'Youville came out strong in the first quarter as a pair of Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) free throws sent the Spartans up 7-1. Elizabeth Bradley (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) began to heat up with a pair of three pointers that put D'Youville up 13-5. Bradley's three would be the final points of the first quarter as the stifling Spartan defense had the team up 13-5 after one quarter of play.
Through the first 1:33 of the second, Hilbert pulled to within four to put pressure on D'Youville. That pressure furthered as three free throws made it a three-point game, but Bradley broke the scoring drought to start the second with a big three with 4:41 to go in the half. The Hawks nearly drew even with D'Youville as they trailed by one at 19-18 with under two left on the clock, by a Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) free throw that left the lead with D'Youville heading into the half 20-18.
To begin the third, Haley Kirisits (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) was big for the Spartans. She scored six of the first eight points for the women to extend their lead to nine at 28-19. Hore, Kirisits, Bradley, and Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) were the only Spartans to score in the third as a Riedel layup made the score 36-22, but Brigid McKeone (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) capped off the scoring for the women in the quarter with the Spartans leading 42-30 after three.
Kirisits again came out hot in the fourth, scoring the first seven points for the women. She extended D'Youville's lead to 53-39 with 5:01 to go in the game as the Spartans had a comfortable lead over the defending champs. Hilbert made every effort to make a game of it, but late free throws from Hore iced the game as D'Youville handed Hilbert a 64-47 loss in the conference opener.
Kirisits and Bradley had career days for the women with the two scoring career highs of 18 and 16 points respectively. Hore had a fantastic game as she nearly recorded her first triple-double of the season with 16 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds. Alton was big off the bench grabbing eight rebounds.
McKeone, Emmalea Erlandson (West Valley, NY/Ellicottville), and Sarah Wittek (Elma, NY/Iroquois) all grabbed two rebounds while Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and Ashley Schenkel (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) each had one. Becca Krenzer (Pavilion, NY/Batavia-Notre Dame) had two steals and three rebounds in the win while Riedel added five points and three rebounds.
The next game for the women will come this Saturday, November 23 as they host Keuka at 1:00pm.
