Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team lost their first home game of the season on Saturday afternoon in overtime, falling to the Keuka Wolves 75-71.
D'Youville had a very balanced scoring attack to begin the game with the first four baskets from the women coming from four different players. Following an Elizabeth Bradley (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) free throw, the Spartans went up 10-7 before she drilled a three minutes later to put the women up 14-7 with 3:13 to go in the first. At the end of the first, Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) hit a three before a Keuka layup would make the score 19-11 in favor of the Spartans after one.
The Wolves would begin to close the gap in the second quarter. They scored the first nine points in the second to close the gap to one at 21-20. Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) would add a layup with 4:56 to go in the half to give the Spartans a three-point lead, then adding two free throws to make it a five-point advantage. With 3:11 remaining in the second, Keuka got their first lead of the game before D'Youville began to pull away at the end of the half with Hore scoring back-to-back layups to put the Spartans up 35-27 at the half.
It didn't take long for D'Youville to extend their lead to double-digits as they went up 39-29 through the first 1:17 of play in the third. However, the Wolves would come roaring back to tie the game at 41 just a few minutes later. The score would then go back-and-forth over the next several minutes before the Spartans would pull ahead at the end of the quarter with a Haley Kirisits (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) made jumper with D'Youville ahead 51-47 heading into the fourth.
After Keuka came back to tie the game, Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) put the Spartans back up by four 3:31 into the fourth. That lead grew by one with 2:54 to go in the game as Kirisits hit a jumper to make the score 59-54 in favor of D'Youville, but the next seven points would come from the Wolves as they led 61-59 with 0:42 to go in regulation. Moments later, Riedel would drill a massive three to put the Spartans up one. A Keuka free throw would tie the game at 62 and the two teams would end regulation tied, heading into overtime.
Keuka came out swinging in overtime. They scored nine of the first 11 points to take control of the extra period. With 0:30 to go, Bradley drilled another three to make it a four-point game. However, the Spartans were unable to overcome the early deficit in OT and fell in their first home game 75-71.
Bradley led the team with a career high 19 points go go with three boards and two assists. Hore scored 15 points with seven rebounds and a team-high six assists as Kirisits earned her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Riedel chipped in with 10 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
Becca Krenzer (Pavilion, NY/Batavia-Notre Dame) tallied nine rebounds while Alton scored seven points to go with five rebounds and three assists off the bench. Emmalea Erlandson (West Valley, NY/Ellicottville) added four points and four rebounds while Brigid McKeone (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) added an assist.
The next game for the women will come this Tuesday, November 26 as the women travel to Alfred State to play the Pioneers at 6:00pm.
