Alfred, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team improved to 2-0 in conference play this season as they defeated the Alfred State Pioneers by the final score of 65-50.
D'Youville held an early 8-3 lead over the Pioneers in the first half before Alfred State would close the gap to one at 8-7. As the quarter progressed, the two teams would go back-and-forth until the Pioneers overtook the Spartans on a buzzer-beater to lead 15-14 after one.
An Elizabeth Bradley (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) three gave the Spartans the lead back at 20-18 nearly two minutes into the second. The score would stay locked at 20-18 for nearly three minutes and D'Youville wouldn't score again until 3:34 remaining in the half as Emmalea Erlandson (West Valley, NY/Ellicottville) made a layup to break the scoring drought.
In the final three minutes of the quarter, the Spartans would start to get going as Erlandson scored four consecutive points, followed by Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) scoring eight straight to give the women a 32-20 lead. Erlandson and Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) hit free throws to close out a strong final few minutes of the half with D'Youville leading 35-22.
Alfred State opened up the second half with a 9-2 scoring run as they made every attempt to get back in the game. D'Youville would answer with a 7-0 scoring run, capped off by a Brigid McKeone (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) made jumper to extend the team's lead to 14. Ashley Schenkel (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) and Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) would close out the third with points to maintain the 14-point lead as the women went into the fourth leading 49-35.
The Spartans would only continue to score in the fourth to put away the game. Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) drilled a three to give the women their largest lead to that point in the game of 17. For the final 4:08 of the game, D'Youville would lock it down on the defensive end as they did not allow another point as the Spartans earned their second conference win of the season by the final of 65-50.
Carpenter led the team with 14 points in the game, missing her first double-double of the season by one rebounds as she collected nine total. Hore added a team-high 14 rebounds to go with six points as McKeone added six points as well. Sarah Wittek (Elma, NY/Iroquois) grabbed one rebound while Becca Krenzer (Pavilion, NY/Batavia-Notre Dame) pulled in two.
Alton had a strong all-around game with nine points, six rebounds, and four assists in a team-high 34 minutes. Bradley also added nine points with Erlandson and Riedel scoring eight each. Haley Kirisits (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) scored four points with nine rebounds.
In total, seven women grabbed six or more rebounds while 10 of the 12 women that played had at least one rebound. All but two players scored in the contest with eight players scoring four or more points.
The next game for the women will come next Wednesday, December 4 as they host Penn State-Behrend in the College Center Gym at 8:00pm.
