Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team improved to 3-0 in conference play as they defeated the Penn State-Behrend Lions 68-59 in the AMCC Game of the Week.
D'Youville never trailed in the first quarter, as they got out to an 8-5 lead following a Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) made free throw. Hore and Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) would then begin to take over as the two score the next 12 points for the women as the team had a commanding 19-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) would begin the second with a big three, followed by a Becca Krenzer (Pavilion, NY/Batavia-Notre Dame) made layup to push the Spartan's lead to 24-7. With 4:36 to go in the half, Haley Kirisits (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) made a layup to give the women their largest lead of the game at 17. Two Hore free throws then made it a 20-point lead two minutes later as D'Youville was dominating going into halftime, leading 38-18.
Behrend came out in the third quarter and began to chip away at their deficit. After three minutes of play, the Lions trailed by 16 and then were down to 13 with 3:22 to go in the third. However, the Spartans would not back down to the Lions pressure as Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) made a layup with under two in the quarter as the women pulled back out to an 18-point lead that they held to the end of the third, leading 56-38.
The Lions would take over the game in the fourth. They would outscore the Spartans 9-3 through the first five minutes as they worked their way back into the game and trailed 59-47. Minutes later, Berhend was behind by 11 at 61-50 and then would climb to within nine with 0:38 but it was too late for the Lions to mount a full comeback as the Spartans led wire-to-wire and took down the undefeated Lions 68-59.
