Greensburg, PA - The D'Youville women's basketball team suffered their first conference loss of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats by the final of 72-65.
Greensburg grabbed the early lead as they went ahead 9-5 just under three minutes into the game. Elizabeth Bradley (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) drilled a three several minutes later to tie the game at 11 before the Bobcats went up by five with 1:46 to go in the first. Bradley would then close out the first with a layup to put D'Youville down by three at 21-18.
D'Youville would pull to within one-point of the Bobcats within the first two minutes of the second before Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) made a layup to put the women up by one. Carpenter would then hit a three minutes later to give the Spartans their largest lead of the game at three. For nearly two minutes, the score would remain tied at 30 before the Spartans began to pull away. Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) would make a layup with 0:14 on the clock to send D'Youville into the half leading 38-32.
The third opened up with back-to-back baskets from Brigid McKeone (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) to increase the lead to 10. Greensburg would chip away at their deficit to trail by one at 47-46 with 2:48 to go in the quarter as they took the lead less than a minute later. To close out the quarter, Greensburg would hit a three as they led 53-48 after three.
It took nearly three minutes of the fourth for the Spartans to get back in the game as a Bradley three tied the game at 57. However from that point, the Bobcats would again hold off D'Youville from taking the lead. With 1:52 to go in the game, the Spartans trailed by six and were unable to close the gap any further as they fell to Greensburg 72-65.
Alton had a very strong game on Saturday, scoring 11 points with a career-high 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. Bradley led the team in scoring with 16 points while Hore added 15, five rebounds, five assists, and five steals. McKeone and Carpenter added eight points each as well.
The next game for the women will come next weekend as they travel to Penn State-Altoona to take on the Lions at 3:00pm.
