Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team took down the Medaille Mavericks on Wednesday evening by the final score of 45-36.
Both teams struggled from the field to begin the game. Brigid McKeone (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) shouldered the scoring load early for the women as she scored the first two baskets for the Spartans to tie the game at 4-4. With 0:24 to go in the first, Medaille took at eight-point lead at 12-4 before Becca Krenzer (Pavilion, NY/Batavia-Notre Dame) hit a jumper to send D'Youville into the second trailing 12-6.
The second quarter saw the Spartans turn in on. D'Youville scored the first two baskets of the quarter to cut their deficit to two. The Mavericks would respond with eight unanswered points before McKeone would take over yet again. She scored 12 consecutive points for the Spartans to put the team ahead 22-21 with 2:10 to go in the half. Neither team would score after McKeone's layup to give D'Youville the lead as the Spartans led at the half 22-21.
Medaille's deficit would grow to seven nearly half way through the third as Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) began to heat up, scoring five of the first seven points of the quarter for the women. Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) added four points with McKeone tallying another layup as the Spartans opened up their largest lead of the game at 33-24. After McKeone's layup with 3:31 to go in the quarter, neither team would score until Hore nailed a jumper with 0:07 remaining to put D'Youville up 35-24 heading into the final quarter of play.
D'Youville would continue to separate themselves from their opponents in the fourth, extending their lead to 41-24 after 3:59 of play in the fourth following a Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) layup. The Spartan defense would not allow Medaille back into the game following allowing just three points in the third as they shut down the Mavericks to go on to win the game 45-36.
McKeone had a career game as the freshman recorded her first career double-double. She led the team with career highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds as she shot 7-8 from the field. Hore added nine points, four steals, two rebounds, and two assists in the win. Riedel grabbed 11 boards to go with two blocks and four points as she was impressive for the women.
Carpenter played a big role off the bench for the women with five points and six rebounds. Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) added six rebounds with two steals while Ashley Schenkel (Webster, NY/Webster-Thomas) played significant minutes while recording four points and three rebounds. Krenzer added two points while Elizabeth Bradley (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) scored three.
Haley Kirisits (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) grabbed six rebounds in the game while Sarah Wittek (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) and Emmalea Erlandson (West Valley, NY/Ellicottville) each brought in two. Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) added a rebound and an assist in the win.
The Spartans will next play in the New Year as they travel to La Roche to play the Redhawks on Saturday, January 4 at 3:00pm.
