Pittsburgh, PA - The D'Youville women's basketball team played a hard-fought game against La Roche on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Redhawks 61-57.
La Roche came out and put up an 8-4 lead through just over four minutes of play. That lead grew to seven at 13-6 before Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) made a free throw to make it a five-point game. However, the Redhawks would close out the first quarter on a 6-1 run and lead 23-13 after one.
The lead grew to 12 for the Redhawks early in the second, but the Spartans would start to get going as the quarter went on. Brigid McKeone (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and Hore trimmed the deficit to eight before La Roche went ahead by 12 with 0:52 to go in the half. That score would remain the same through the final minute as the Redhawks led 35-23 at the half.
D'Youville battled through the first five minutes of the third and would bring their deficit to under 10 on a Haley Kirisits (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) made layup. In the final two minutes of the third, the Spartans would chip away at their deficit even further as Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) hit a pair of tree throws with 0:10 remaining as the women trailed by five at 39-44 through three quarters.
Newcomer Sara Pfeiffer (Olean, NY/Olean) tied the game at 44 with a big three 1:43 into the fourth as D'Youville overcame their early deficit. Pfieffer then tied the game again at 46 and then gave the women their first lead of the game on another made layup. The two teams would go back-and-forth before La Roche went ahead at 53-51 with 3:56 to go in the game and held their lead to the end, winning the game 61-57.
Pfeiffer led D'Youville with 18 points in her first game as a Spartan, adding two rebounds and two steals. McKeone added 12 points and six rebounds while Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) grabbed six boards as well. Hore tallied seven points with a team-high six assists with Alton adding seven points.
D'Youville will next play next Wednesday, January 8 as they play at Mount Aloysius against the Mounties at 3:00pm.
