Cresson, PA - The D'Youville women's basketball team got back on the winning track Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Mount Aloysius Mounties on the road by the final score of 68-53.
D'Youville came out strong with a balanced offensive attack as four different Spartans scored to give the women an 8-0 lead through nearly four minutes of play. Newcomer Sara Pfeiffer (Olean, NY/Olean) scored two of those early points to go with back-to-back threes to put D'Youville up by 10 at 13-3. With just over two minutes to go in the first quarter, the Mounties brought their deficit down to six before the Spartans would finish just as strong as they started the first as they led 21-10 after one.
The women continued to build upon their lead in the second quarter as Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) scored a layup to put D'Youville ahead by 14. Deeper in the second as halftime neared, Hore continued to produce as she scored an and-one that increased the team's lead to 16 with an Emmalea Erlandson (Ellicottville, NY/West Valley) layup that increased that lead to 18. In the final two-plus minutes of the half, Mount Aloysius scored four unanswered to trail at halftime 36-22.
Mount Aloysius came out in the second half and chipped away at the D'Youville lead. Their deficit closed to eight at 30-38 just 1:34 into the third with the Mounties hanging around to continuing to trail by eight with under four minutes to go in the quarter. Pfeiffer continued her sharp-shooting late into the third with a three to send D'Youville up 47-34 before the Mounties would trim the Spartan lead back down to single digits as the Spartans led 49-40 after three.
To begin the fourth, D'Youville began to get their offense rolling again with another Pfeiffer three that put the team up 54-40. Bringing the score back to single digits with 6:05 to go in the game, Hore would drill a three that put the team back up by 12 seconds later. From that point on, the Spartans would maintain their double-digit lead as Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) helped ice the game with a pair of free throws as D'Youville would win the game 68-53.
Hore led the team with a double-double as she had team highs with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Pfeiffer added 19 points with five rebounds, three assists, and a team-high three steals. Elizabeth Bradley (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) added six points and four rebounds while Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) grabbed seven boards with two points.
Becca Krenzer (Batavia, NY/Batavia-Notre Dame) and Riedel each scored four points with Brigid McKeone (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) scoring five points with six rebounds. Haley Kirisits (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) scored four points while Erlandson added two. Ashley Schenkel (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) grabbed five rebounds off the bench while Elyse VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford), Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster), Sara Wittek (Marilla, NY/Iroquois), and Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) all saw playing time.
The next game for the women will come at home in exactly one week as they host the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers on Wednesday, January 15 at 8:00pm.
