Spartan Women Make History in Conference Victory

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team had a historic game on Wednesday evening as they defeated the visiting Pitt.-Bradford Panthers by the final score of 73-59.

Bradford came out of the gates hot, building up a 9-2 lead through three minutes of play. D'Youville would begin to get going on offense as the game got deeper into the first with Sara Pfeiffer (Olean, NY/Olean) hitting back-to-back threes for the women - a theme that would be prevalent throughout the evening. With 1:38 to go in the first, Haley Kirisits (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) pulled the Spartan's deficit to single digits at 10-18 before Pfeiffer would close out the quarter with two more threes as the women trailed 16-21 after one.

The late momentum from D'Youville in the first carried over into the second as Elizabeth Bradley (Lockport, NY/Starpoint), Emmalea Erlandson (Ellicottville, NY/West Valley), and Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) scored the first three baskets of the second to give D'Youville their first lead of the game at 22-21. Pfeiffer then continued to stay red-hot from three, drilled three consecutive threes to put the Spartans up 31-24. Bradford would come on strong at the end of the half as they ended the second on a 6-0 run to trail 31-30 at the half.

As the second half began, Bradford continued to stay right on the Spartans until they retook the lead at 35-33. The two teams would go back-and-forth throughout the third as the teams traded the lead several times as the two teams were tied 47-47 with 1:06 to go in the quarter. However, Pfeiffer would again hit back-to-back threes to go with a Becca Krenzer (Pavilion, NY/Batavia-Notre Dame) free throw in the final minute of the quarter as D'Youville led 54-49.

The Panthers would again put pressure on the Spartan's lead in the fourth, closing their deficit to three 2:30 into the fourth. As the quarter went on, D'Youville began to pull away with Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) coming up big, hitting a jump shot and then drilling a three to send the women up by 10. Hore and Erlandson would put the game away for D'Youville with several clutch free throws as they closed out the game with a 73-59.

Pfeiffer had a historic game for the women in just her third game as a Spartan. The freshman made 10 three pointers in the win - a program record and the most in D'Youville basketball history. Her 10 threes are also tied for the most in a game in the NCAA this season. She led the team with 34 points as she was 10-16 from three and 12-20 from the field, adding three steals.

Not to be outdone, Hore recorded her first career triple-double and the first in the program since 2004-05. The sophomore scored 10 points with 10 rebounds and 10 assists for the first triple-double of points, rebounds, and assists in program history.

Kirisits added 14 points and six rebounds off the bench with Erlandson and Riedel each scoring five points. Krenzer and Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) added a point each while Ashley Schenkel (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) and Brigid McKeone (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) each played important roles in the victory.

The next game for D'Youville will come this Saturday, January 18 as the women will host Franciscan at 3:00pm in the College Center Gym.
