Women Move To Third Place in Victory over Altoona

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team secured their second consecutive victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Penn State-Altoona Lions by the score of 62-58.

Altoona was out ahead of the Spartans early, leading 7-2 through nearly three minutes of play. A Sarah Wittek (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) free throw was the only point score between the two teams until the Lions drilled a three to send the team up 10-3 with 3:51  to go in the first. The Spartans would continue to chip away at their deficit in the final minutes of the the quarter as Brigid McKeone (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) hit two free throws to send the Spartans into the second quarter trailing 9-12.

Wittek again came up big for the Spartans from the line in the second, tying the game at 13 on a pair of made free throws. The Lions would begin to get things going on both ends of the court with D'Youville going cold. Only two points came from the Spartans in the final 5:05 of the second with Altoona leading 27-17 at the half.

Before the Spartans got going in the third, the Lions extended their lead to 11 early in the third. D'Youville would hit their stride as Haley Kirisits (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) hit a jumper to put the Spartans behind by seven. Sara Pfeiffer (Olean, NY/Olean) would then take over, hitting back-to-back threes and making the score 33-34 in favor of Altoona. She would then continue her scoring run with the next five points as D'Youville took the lead, 38-34. A pair of free throws from Pfeiffer and Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) would close out the third for the women as they outscored Altoona 25-13 and led 44-40 heading into the fourth. 

The Lions would open up the fourth with seven unanswered points to retake the lead. They would maintain a share of the lead heading into the final minutes of the game, leading 55-51 with 3:27 to go in the game. That advantage grew to six before Kirisits scored four of six points and D'Youville led 61-57. Each team would make a free throw in the final second of the game, but the Spartans were able to complete their comeback to defeat the Lions 62-58.

Hore led the team with 19 points and 14 rebounds, adding five assists and four steals. Pfeiffer scored 18 with a team-high six steals. She also grabbed six rebounds with five assists. Kirisits had an outstanding game with 16 points and nine rebounds as well as three steals and two assists.

Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) was big on the defensive end for the women with a team-high three blocks and added five rebounds. Wittek scored five points with four rebounds and two blocks while McKeone blocked a pair of shots. Emmalea Erlandson (West Valley, NY/Ellicottville) and Elizabeth Bradley (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) each had four rebounds while Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) grabbed two and Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) had one.

The next game for the women is Wednesday, January 29 at Medaille. Tip-off is set for 8:00pm.
